Juan Antonio Suárez “Cano”
(Guitarrista y compositor / Barcelona, España. 1973)
“You can be free within flamenco.”
[Juan Antonio Suárez, CANO]
Everything in the production bears the unmistakable mark of a gypsy. Enriched by the music that influenced him over a lifetime, he has created a very personal sound that makes his music different and original. The actual content is the most valued part of the composition. A complex world of life experience and knowledge lends unique moving depth. His notes go beyond mere technique to become one with pain and joy felt deeply in the soul. The flamenco sound of his guitar has a religious tone of sacred winds that take us to unknown inaccessible terrain, creating dense musical atmospheres that stir the most remote memories. If flamenco is an inward-looking genre, the music of “Cano” anxiously strives to surprise and to achieve a relaxed encounter with the loftiest of aims: the solace and mercy of the human heart.
Francisco Suárez
Deeply rooted in Extremaduran gypsy tradition and in the flamenco life, he became part of this art at an early age, thanks to innate talent and the teachings of his maestros Remolino, his father and Manolo Labrador.
After his debut in 1990 at Barcelona’s Palau de la Música with dancer Flora Albaicín, he began to play for other great stars of the world of flamenco such as Manuela Carrasco, Merche Esmeralda, Belén Maya, Sara Baras, Niña Pastori, Javier Barón, Joaquín Grilo, Andrés Marín and Chocolate among others.
In 1993 he performed in Japan with the company of dancer Belén Maya with whom he also participated at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla in a show in honor of the dancer Antonio in 1994. One year later, he composed the music for the show Plaza Alta, a musical that debuted at Madrid’s Teatro Albéniz.
After 2000 he played and composed for Caponato Argamacho (chamber flamenco) and the duo Hispánico Numen (flamenco, classic and contemporary music) of which he was a member, performing at the Royal Concertgebow in Amsterdam, the Olympia in París, Hierbabuena in San Francisco and the Joyce theatre in New York.
Over the last nine years, Cano has appeared at theaters throughout the world and composed for important flamenco works. He has also recorded with prestigious artists such as Rafael Jiménez “Falo” on Cante Gitano, with the great guitarist and composter Gerardo Núñez on the Nueva Escuela de Guitarra Flamenca and Epitome, as well as continuing with the trio Caponata Argamacho. This incessant creative activity would culminate with the recording of his first album, “Son de Ayer” in 2008.
“Cano” has received excellent reviews in the most important music publications and periodicals the world over, such as the New York Times (U.S.), Figaro (France), Ceby Daily News (Philippines) and the Correo of Sevilla (Spain).
