Closely related to the traditional gypsy roots of Extremadura and the art of flamenco, he was a part of this artistic manifestation from very early on. His natural talent, along with the teachings of maestros like Remolino, Sr. and Manolo Labrador, make up his background for becoming a guitarist and composer. Debuting in 1990 at Barcelona’s Palau de la Músic along with dancer Flora Albaicín, he began a period during which he accompanied the great stars of flamenco dance: Manuela Carrasco, Merche Esmeralda, Belén Maya, Sara Baras, Niña Pastori, Javier Barón, Joaquín Grilo, Andrés Marín, Rocío Molina and Rafaela Carrasco among others. Between 1995 and 1999 he composed musical works for stage director Francisco Suárez such as Plaza Alta, el Sueño de los Gitanos, which premiered at Madrid’s Teatro Albéniz, Bodas de Sangre with Merche Esmeralda and El Romancero Gitano which debuted at Madrid’s Teatro Español. He also collaborated in Música Más Allá del Tiempo and Asimetrías of Andrés Marín, and Abrazo which debuted in Irvine, Los Angeles. In the year 2000 he began to compose for Caponata Argamacho, chamber flamenco, currently under the name Hispánico Numen, flamenco, classic and contemporary music, with performances at the Royal Concertgebow of Ámsterdam, the Olympia in París, the Yerbabuena in San Francisco and New York’s Joyce Theater. The group’s perseverance led to their participation in numerous festivals, both within Spain and abroad where they came into contact with a diversity of genres. In addition to flamenco, historical music, jazz, classical and contemporary influences have all made their way into the repertoire. His artistic projection has been corroborated with performances at prestigious concert venues in Germany, Australia, Brunei, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, China, the U.S., Egypt, Scotland, Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Honduras, Hong-Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Macao, Namibia, Portugal, the U.K., Singapore and Syria, acclaimed by public and critics. As a complement to the performances, all the members of the group have given master classes with each instrument. Most noteworthy is Juan Antonio Suárez and his career with the flamenco guitar and flamenco in general, at a wide variety of cultural and educational institutions. In this respect, he has offered his services at the Universities of Edinburgh, Melbourne and Hong-Kong, the Music Conservatories of Glasgow and Los Ángeles, and the International Music Schools of Singapore and Brunei. Over the last nine years, Cano has appeared in theaters throughout the world, and composed for major flamenco works. He has also recorded with prestigious artists such as singer Rafael Jiménez “Falo” on “Cante Gitano”; with the great guitarist and composer Gerardo Núñez on “La Nueva Escuela de Guitarra Flamenca” and on “Epitome”. And of course his continuing work with the group “Hispánico Numen”. This non-stop creative activity led to the recording of his first album “Son de Ayer” in 2008. With this album he has performed at prestigious venues and festivals such as Madrid’s Teatro Español, the Jueves Flamencos of the Monte in Seville and the Festival de Jerez among others. In 2009 he toured the United States and Australia, as well as Copenhagen, Helsinki, Cabo Verde, Edinburgh and Dublin. Also noteworthy is his recording with the renowned director Carlos Saura for the documentary “Flamenco Flamenco”. Cano has received excellent reviews from the most important musical publications and international dailies such as the New York Times, Le Fígaro in France, Cebú Daily News in Philippines and the Spanish dailies El País and El Correo de Sevilla.
